Finding a Quality Program
Once you have made your career decision, assistance in identifying the program in your area can be obtained from a number of sources:
- American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE) Member Directory
AAfPE has a membership directory which is available from AAfPE's headquarters and information is available through AAfPE's web site. - Local colleges and universities
- Paralegal associations - Three national associations are the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) and the American Alliance of Paralegals, Inc. (AAPI). There may be local chapters in your area. Contact their headquarters or websites.
- Paralegal placement agencies. There are employment agencies specializing in placing paralegals.
- Practicing paralegals
- Graduates of local paralegal programs
- American Bar Association Standing Committee on Paralegals (SCOP). This committee has a list of programs which is available on its web site.
- International Paralegal Management Association (IPMA) has members in law firms and corporate law departments throughout the United States and Canada. Information about IPMA can be obtained from their headquarters and is available at IPMA's web site.
- Local bar associations
- Law firms and individual attorneys who have worked with paralegals
